Your Guide To Virtual Visits & Consultations

With everything going on in the world, it can be hard to keep up. Between business closures, self-quarantines, and stay-at-home orders, there’s no denying our daily life is looking a little different these days! If you’re currently undergoing orthodontic treatment you may be wondering how all of these changes will affect your progress. Or perhaps you were just looking to get started on your journey to a healthier smile, and now you’re not sure that’s even a possibility.

If this sounds like you, we have great news! Thanks to today’s technology, we now have all the tools necessary to stay connected. Although our office is closed, we’re still here to address all of your orthodontic needs! We’re now offering virtual visits and consultations so that we can better serve you. This allows us to keep track of your smile progress while continuing to practice social distancing. To find out more about these new virtual services, keep reading below!

How do virtual visits work?

Virtual visits are a new resource being implemented in orthodontic practices across the country. Many people may be unsure of how exactly virtual visits are conducted and what they should expect. Thankfully, the process is quick and simple, making it extremely user-friendly! Your first step is to visit our virtual consultations page. From there, you’ll simply take a few photos of your teeth and smile, provide your personal information, and send it in to our office. That’s it! From there, Dr. Hemphill will review your photos and any notes or questions you’ve included about your specific case before reaching out with the next steps.

Tips for taking great photos

The biggest obstacle most of our patients face regarding virtual visits is taking clear, effective photos. Don’t let that discourage you from seeking treatment! We’ve included example photos in our registration form, as well as a short video tutorial to help you get the best photos possible.

If you’re wearing elastics as a part of your orthodontic treatment, you should wear them for your photos. This will allow Dr. Hemphill to check that you’re wearing them correctly and provide any feedback if needed. If you’re out of elastics, let us know and we’re happy to send you some more by mail!

Why virtual consultations are important

As “safer-at-home” orders continue to be mandated around the country, it’s become necessary for orthodontists to find new and inventive ways to continue to provide care. By making the transition to virtual care, Dr. Hemphill is able to stay connected to his patients and meet the orthodontic needs of the community. Whether you’re keeping up with current treatment or are just taking the first steps in your smile transformation, virtual visits are the perfect way to prioritize your smile, even while quarantined.

Virtual visits are beneficial if you experience an orthodontic emergency. If you’re unsure if what you’re experiencing is a true emergency, scheduling a virtual appointment can eliminate the guesswork. Being able to communicate your concerns to Dr. Hemphill will allow us to provide a remedy to your problem quickly and efficiently.

A virtual visit can also be helpful if you’re experiencing minor pain or discomfort or have concerns about your treatment plan. In many cases, our team is able to review and assess any damage and make suggestions with a virtual visit alone. We can also walk you through any home remedies, for anything from irritations to loose brackets. However, if we determine your situation is a true emergency, of course will work with you to find a time that he can see you in the office.

How you can avoid emergencies

While we’re facing extended closures, it’s important that you take every possible precaution to avoid orthodontic emergencies. If you’re a current patient, be sure to continue following all of our recommendations for taking good care of your teeth, braces, and other appliances. That requires:

  • Avoiding any foods that are sticky or crunchy that can damage your braces
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time
  • Flossing every night before bed
  • Wearing a mouthguard if participating in any at-home sports
  • Informing us of any broken or damaged equipment
  • Keeping all Invisalign aligners clean and safely stored when you’re not wearing them
